About this place
One diner who came for the whale harihari hot pot recalls being surprised by an unexpected dish. Sumiyoshiya’s menu lists harihari hot pot at 1,300 yen. Having not eaten whale harihari hot pot in a long time, the diner found the order brought back memories. The option to choose a hot pot alongside familiar izakaya fare is part of what makes the menu interesting.
There is plenty to choose from among the changing daily dishes, too. A regular looks forward to the oden, fish dishes and vegetable dishes, which vary with the season and special occasions. Another diner said the large platters lined up along the counter brought to mind an old-fashioned family table.
For a meal centred on fish, options include bluefin tuna sashimi, fresh octopus sashimi and scallops grilled with butter. One diner who ordered octopus sashimi and yaki udon said they were dishes they would want to eat again. For something more casual, there is the house yakisoba, listed at 500 yen. Other diners have enjoyed the yakisoba and yaki udon, too, so there is a range of ways to eat here, from sharing hot pot and fish dishes to ordering a noodle dish as the centrepiece.
Beer is available, along with Kiku-Masamune sake, listed at 200 cc for 400 yen, and highballs at 400 yen. This izakaya suits an evening of pairing drinks with a few small plates, as well as a more leisurely meal built around a dish of your choice.
